You may be familiar with the emotionally reactive period of adolescence that we call "teenage fire." This is an important time for youth to find their way from childhood to adulthood, but it can be difficult for parents and the community. The most effective tool to guide this transition through harmful situations and toward positive outcomes is mentoring. Throughout human history it has been the mentor’s job to be present and provide guidance for emotional development from outside of the immediate family. The old villages provided mentoring because they knew: “If we don’t initiate the boys, they will burn down the village.” - African proverb Did you have a mentor? Do you want to be a mentor? Threshold Passages, Inc., presents a personal growth workshop open to the public called Mentoring Teenage Fire (MTF). MTF introduces the community to the goals and methods of TPI for initiation and group-based mentoring of teenage boys. Not only will you become familiar with TPI's storytelling style for inner process work for teens, but you also will have an opportunity to get in contact with your own experience around mentoring and being mentored. This workshop is designed for:
MTF features TPI's original story "The Four Hedgehog Brothers" as the centerpiece of this day-long workshop. You will come away with a new--and ancient--model for connecting with our youth that runs deep below iPods, skateboards, and the awkwardness and coolness on the surface.
